Students celebrated homecoming at the Fall Formal on November 16 at the Crystal Palace in Harvey. Senior Samantha Arnold was crowned Fall Formal Queen and Archbishop Shaw senior Johnny Mitchell was crowned Fall Formal King. A wonderful time was had by all those who attended. The annual "Thanksgiving" food drive hosted by the National Honor Society is being held after the Thanksgiving break in order to better fulfill the ongoing needs of struggling families. Beginning November 26 donations will be collected. Each grade level has been assigned an item. The collected items will be donated to the Immaculate Conception St. Vincent DePaul Society and benefit our local neighbors in Marrero, Harvey and Westwego. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Spirit Week culminates with the annual Powderpuff games and Homecoming Assembly. Each grade level forms a Powderpuff team, most commonly known as a flag football team, to compete against one another. Spirit points are tallied throughout the week based on participation in activities including penny wars, games during lunch and dressing out according to the daily theme. Perhaps one of the most exciting times of the year at Academy of Our Lady is Spirit Week. Each day during Spirit Week students dressed according to the day’s theme to earn spirit points. Academy of Our Lady’s Robotics Team has recently been named the House Team by NASA for 2019. As the NASA House Team, The Power Struck Girls have also been awarded a $5,000 grant to utilize in preparation for the annual Bayou Regional robotics competition held in the spring. Additionally, the team has received grants from DOW and Leidos. They are sponsored by numerous local businesses including Olive Branch Café, Chick-fil-a Clearview Parkway, BHL Construction, Geico, Diamond Food Distributors and Intralox.
Academy of Our Lady held its annual Grandparents Day on Thursday, November 1. In celebration of All Saints Day, grandparents were invited to campus for mass with their granddaughters. Academy of Our Lady's Thalian Society presents Check Please and the Theatre II class presents 13 Ways to Screw Up Your College Interview. Performances of these two comedies will take place on November 1-3 at 7 pm at the Penguin Petite Theater. Cost to attend is $5.00
Prospective students and their families are invited to experience the innovative Catholic high school of New Orleans at Open House on November 8 at 4-7 pm. Academy of Our Lady introduces talented young women to innovative curricula, highly focused teachers, forward-thinking leadership and a modern technological high school environment. Under the direction of the Salesian Sisters, Academy of Our Lady draws inspiration from St. John Bosco’s educational system of reason, religion and loving kindness.
