Academy of Our Lady’s National Honor Society hosted an Academic Fair for students in first-fourth grade on Saturday, March 17. A school wide rosary procession was held March 14 to end gun violence in schools. As the student body gathered in the Chapel Courtyard, the rosary was prayed in memory of those involved in the Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy in Parkland, Florida. The Jefferson Parish Council declared Wednesday, March 7, 2018 Academy of Our Lady’s Lend a Paw Club Day in Jefferson Parish. As a newly formed club at Academy of Our Lady Lend a Paw’s sole mission is to aid homeless animals throughout the community. Members collect and donate supplies to animal shelters. In addition, members volunteer their time at animal shelters, regularly produce a video segment known as “adoptable of the week” featuring shelter animals which airs on the morning announcements and they reach the community through social media outlets.
Culture Club hosted an International Day during lunch for the student body on March 2. The purpose of International Day is to introduce students to cultures and nations around the world. Members of the Culture Club showcased the politics, economy and culture of different countries.
Academy of Our Lady students competed in the South Central District Literary Rally at Nicholls State University on February 24. Six Academy students will move on to compete in the State Literary Rally on April 21 at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Congratulations Ladies! Fun was had by all at Fantastic Friday Night on March 2. Girls in grades 4-7 made desserts in the Culinary Lab, crafted Irish-themed Penguins and participated in musical trivia. A preview viewing of the spring musical, The Addams Family, was also on the agenda. Guests even learned one of the musical numbers from the cast!
Members of the community supported Academy of Our Lady by participating in the annual Golf Tournament held at Timberlane Country Club on February 24. Alexandria Raney, of Marrero, a senior at Academy of Our Lady, has been honored for her exemplary volunteer service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award. The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to service their communities and their country, was granted by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. In honor of Black History Month, members of the Student Union Diversity in Action Club (SUDIA) coordinated a special school assembly on February 9. The assembly featured musical selections by the choir, a special solo performance by Rechell Cook and a spoken word presentation by several SUDIA members. Guest speakers included Dr. DeJeanne Denet ABHS ’99, Judge Tracy Flemings-Davallier, Cynthia Butler-McIntrye ABHS ’72 and Tiffany Williams AOL ’10. All who attended were inspired and encouraged to work hard, follow their dreams and remember to always trust and walk with God in choosing and accomplishing their goals.
True Love Waits held their annual mass on February 20. Bishop Fernand J. Cheri presided over mass and blessed the rings given to the newest members of True Love Waits. Following the blessing members recited a pledge to live a life based on Christian virtues, especially chastity.
Fleur de Lis, Academy of Our Lady High School’s yearbook, has earned several awards for its 2017 edition. The book was awarded a Gold Medal certificate by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) based at Columbia University in New York. This marks the second time in AOL history that the book has scored high enough to reach the Gold Medal level in this rigorous national critique. Also, the book received several individual awards by the Louisiana Scholastic Press Association (LSPA) in its annual statewide competition for Louisiana high school yearbooks. Fleur de Lis was awarded first place, Division Pages; second place, Feature Photo; second place, Academic Spread; third place, Student Life Spread; third place, Cover Design; and third place, Sports Photo.
Academy of Our Lady's Fine Arts department will host an evening for girls in grades 4-7 on Friday, March 2 at 6:30 - 9:00 p.m. Activities include making ice cream in the Culinary lab, creating penguin crafts and attending a preview performance Academy of Our Lady's spring musical The Addams Family! Guests are encouraged to wear green attire. Cost to attend is $5.00. Registration is required by Wednesday, February 28. Space is limited. Registration taken on a first come, first served basis. Academy of Our Lady students continued celebrating the Feast of St. John Bosco and Catholic Schools Week by giving back to the community January 30 through February 2. Each day students from each grade level ventured out to different organizations throughout the greater New Orleans metro area to volunteer their time. Following Mass on January 29, Academy of Our Lady and Archbishop Shaw participated in the 4th annual Battle of the Birds. During Battle of the Birds, Shaw and Academy of Our Lady students competed against one another in field day games and participated in rally games. Even faculty members as well as Academy of Our Lady Principal Sr. Michelle participated in the fun. Congratulations to Archbishop Shaw for winning the coveted Battle of the Birds trophy this year.
Academy of Our Lady attended Mass at Archbishop Shaw in celebration of the feast of St. John Bosco on January 29. Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond presided over Mass and members of our Salesian family were in attendance.
