The Underclassmen Awards Ceremony was held on May 20. Students were honored for their academic achievements including highest average for each course and honor society participation. Recognition was also awarded to students for involvement in Student Council, Confirmation, maintenance of a good conduct record and an attendance record as well as service. The Broadway Benefit held May 17 was a production sponsored by Academy of Our Lady’s Key Club and Thalian Society to raise money for the Thirst Project. The Thirst Project is a non-profit organization which raises money to build wells to provide safe, clean water and sanitation to the Kingdom of eSwatini. The Key Club promoted and sold tickets while members of the Thalian Society, as well as faculty members, sang a wide range of songs from a variety of Broadway shows. Alumna Kayla Bell ’14 received the first ever Ochsner Rookie of the Year Nursing Excellence Award. Bell is a registered nurse working in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Ochsner Hospital.

Academy of Our Lady celebrated its twelfth baccalaureate mass at Immaculate Conception Church in Marrero and commencement exercise at the Alario Center in Westwego on May 14. Diplomas were awarded to 101 graduates by Principal Sister Michelle Geiger. Dr. RaeNell Houston, Superintendent of Catholic Schools of Archdiocese of New Orleans, addressed the graduates during the commencement exercise. Juniors celebrated receiving their senior rings on Saturday, May 4 at the annual Ring Dance. Click on the title of this post to view pictures.

Senior Madeline Boudreau was awarded the Peter C. Bertucci Scholarship by Jefferson Financial Credit Union. Named after the founder of the credit union and worth $1,000 the scholarship is awarded to those who demonstrate academic excellence as well as school and community involvement.

Academy of Our Lady’s 2018-19 Athletic Awards were held Tuesday, May 7. Athletes were honored by their coaches for their accomplishments on and off the playing field. A total of 170 athletes participated in Academy’s athletic program and 141 of these students maintained a 3.0 GPA or higher this year. The bowling team earned another State Championship while the softball team clinched the District Title. Volleyball, soccer and track & field were district runner ups. The cheerleaders placed in the top five in the state and are ranked 5th in the nation. Sr. Chantal Mukase, FMA, a member of Mother General’s council, visited Academy of Our Lady on April 8-10. The Salesian Sisters are based in Rome where the Superior General and councilors reside. Mother General sends a member of her council to visit every house and school on her behalf within a six-year period. Salesian Sisters are present in 89 countries and five continents. Sr. Chantal begin her visit with a meet and greet with the faculty and staff on the morning of April 8. Following the meet and greet, a school assembly was held in her honor. While on campus Sr. Chantal had the opportunity to meet students, board members, the administration and parents. Members of the Salesians for Life club volunteered at Love in Action over the Easter break. Students stocked, sorted and prepped food and clothes to hand out to those in need.

Seniors Magen Authement, Madeline Boudreau and Macie Hymel were honored on April 25 for their commitment to continue their athletic journey on the collegiate level. Authement will play softball at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi. Boudreau has committed to playing golf at the University of Nebraska Omaha. Senior Emilie Adams was presented with the St. Timothy Award by Archbishop Gregory Aymond at the St. Louis Cathedral on April 7. Adams received this award in recognition of her achievements and contributions to her faith community and to the Our Lady of Perpetual Help parish. To view photos click on the title of this post.

It’s no surprise to the students and staff at Academy of Our Lady that Mrs. Muller, ABHS 07 is a rockstar teacher! Today, a representative from the Smile Doctors visited campus to honor and surprise Mrs. Muller for her dedication to teaching. Freshman Rylie Matherne nominated Mrs. Muller in the “Tell Us Why Your Teacher is a Rockstar” contest sponsored by the Smile Doctors. Senior Katelyn Luebbert attended the Annual Enterprise Scholar Athlete of the Week Ceremony at the Ochsner Sports Performance Center on Airline Drive on April 22. Luebbert was honored as the one of the October Enterprise Scholar Athlete of the Week Recipients. Every week, throughout the Saints season, the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation honors a male or female Scholar Athlete of the Week, for excellence in the classroom as well as on the field of athletic competition.
