Health Science Faculty Member Mrs. Melinda Harlow was honored as Teacher of the Year for her work as moderator of the Stars and Stripes Club. During graduation this year Mrs. Angela Adams, mother of Molly Adams ’21 and Emilie Adams ’19, was honored for her service to Academy of Our Lady with an honorary Academy of Our Lady diploma. Mrs. Adams embodies the Salesian value of “serving rather than being served.” For seven years she has spent countless hours assisting at school events, representing the parent board as president, and showing appreciation to the faculty and staff at Academy of Our Lady. Her leadership, dedication, and service has set an example for all those that come after her and has made a lasting impact on the entire Academy of Our Lady family. Sr. Jana San Juan’s Environmental Science class participated in the Sewer Science Program which is designed to encourage students to explore wastewater treatment and water quality. Students learn the significance of water, treatment processes and their impact on the environment. Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng presented Sr. Jana with a Certificate of Merit for participation in the Sewer Science Program in service to the community. Junior Olivia St. Germain is the recipient of the Jaqueline Cambre Scholarship given by the St. Joseph Women’s Club in Gretna. Recipients of this award have exemplary grades, project good character and are active in the school and community activities. The monetary value of the award is a $1,000 scholarship. The award was presented to Olivia by Father Gary Copping. According to NOLA.com, Jackie Cambre founded two ongoing traditions at St. Joseph’s, the annual living rosary in the garden held each October and Group #135 of the Schoenstatt Rosary Family of Louisiana which is continued by members of the women’s club. Both of Jacqueline Cambre’s daughters, Gretna Mayor Belinda C. Constant and Wendy C. Bush, are Archbishop Blenk High Schools Alumnae.
Academy of Our Lady's Thalian Society is hosting another Bits of Broadway fundraiser benefiting Second Harvest Food Bank. Private ceremonies were held for each graduate of the class of 2021 and her family over the course of May 17, 18 and 19. Diplomas were awarded to 109 graduates. The Class of 2021 earned a total of $7,949,556 in scholarships. In addition, Academy of Our Lady’s Class of 2021 is leaving campus with a total 468 college credit hours. The junior class received their senior rings with a special Ring and May Crowning Ceremony held May 15. A prayer service was held with class officers crowning Mary, our mother and helper. The newest members of the Academy of Our Lady family gathered on campus April 28 for Welcome Night. Incoming pre-freshmen, freshmen and transfer students received important information for the upcoming school year and viewed presentations from members of the administration. Students were recently asked to vote for a teacher they felt should be awarded Academy of Our Lady’s Teacher of the Year. When asked to describe their teachers the words patient, kind, caring, dedicated, organized, energetic, passionate, confident, poised, inspiring, encouraging, understanding, reasonable, helpful, engaging, interactive, welcoming and genuine are just a few adjectives that were used. Academy of Our Lady Robotics Team member sophomore Kyra Poree’ has been named a Dean’s List Finalist by the FIRST Tech Challenge. Kyra is just one of four students in the four-state region of Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi to be selected. As a finalist, Kyra will participate in the championship round of interviews for the Dean’s List Award. For more click on the title of this post.
The class of 2021 was celebrated May 11 with Baccalaureate Mass. Valedictorian Olivia Marque and Salutatorian Farrah Labadie addressed their classmates. A ceremony was held following Mass announcing the honor graduates as well as the recipients of the Golden Scepter Award and Fiat Voluntas Tua Principal’s Award. Alumnae of Archbishop Blenk High School and Immaculata High School with daughters graduating were also honored. Congratulations to all the graduates!
