The sophomores attended their annual class retreat on Friday, February 22. Planned by the Peer Ministers in Religion IV Honors, the girls took part in prayer and activities which allowed them to grow closer in their faith as well as to their classmates. Gospel Roads is a week-long service retreat where students have the opportunity to give back to the community and experience God’s love through serving others. On this retreat during July 6-13, participants will have the opportunity to meet new people and make long lasting friendships all the while growing closer to God. On February 11 Academy of Our Lady celebrated Mass in honor of the True Love Waits club. The club is designed to promote the values of chastity and purity while integrating Christian values in club members’ daily lives. Following Mass students were honored for their academic achievements with the annual honor society induction ceremony. Academy of Our Lady Honor Societies include French Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, National Art Honor Society, National English Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, Rho Kappa and Science National Honor Society. Academy of Our Lady’s Student Union Diversity in Action club hosted a Women in Professional Careers Day during lunch on Friday, February 8. Kim Knighten, Community Outreach Representative at United Healthcare and alumna Tiffany Williams ’10 AOL, Promotions Director of Cumulus Media spoke to students and answered their questions regarding the professional world.
Academy of Our Lady's Student Council is pleased to host a Mardi Gras Mingle on February 15 at 7-10 pm in the cafeteria. The bowling team has completed the first third of the season undefeated with a 4 and 0 record defeating Mount Carmel Academy, Crescent City Christian School, Albany High School and Salmen High School. The Penguins competed in the Louisiana Invitational Baker Tournament held in Baton Rouge on Saturday, February 2. The Ambassadors attended Mass with other elementary and high schools throughout the Archdiocese of New Orleans on February 1 in celebration of Catholic Schools Week. Academy of Our Lady’s Lend A Paw club held a school-wide emergency supply drive for the both Jefferson Parish Animal Shelters. Items collected included treats, food and toys. The Westbank and Eastbank shelters recently accepted around 100 dogs from the St. John Parish Animal Shelter. St. John animal control seized more than 100 cats and dogs from deplorable conditions from a home in St. John Parish. Given the number rescued they were unable to house the animals moving them to Jefferson Parish animal shelters. To view photos click on the tile of this post.
