The National Honor Society Tapping Ceremony is a great tradition at Academy of Our Lady. Students took a break from their studies on Thursday, October 17 to meet with their Penguin Families. Each Penguin Family is made up of multiple students from each grade level and meet twice a year to take on service orientated projects. This year’s fall projects included deployment ornaments for military families, crochet hats for patients at West Jefferson Cancer Center, thanksgiving placemats and letters for Meals on Wheels, fleece blankets for those in need, sock stuffed animals for the battered women’s shelter and animal bandannas for the local animal shelter. Academy of Our Lady’s school yearbook, "Fleur De Lis," was honored with three awards at a journalism conference at Loyola University. At the annual Journalism Education Association (JEA) / Loyola Media Day on September 26, the yearbook received citations for feature story writing and for overall graphical design in the conference's annual yearbook competition. The Fine Arts and Religion departments recently hosted a Fantastic Friday Night for girls in 4th-7th grade. The theme for the evening was A Spirited Party is Brewing! Activities included creating an original Halloween song, making treats in the culinary lab, crafting Mary Mazzarello keychains, learning to apply stage makeup and performing a Halloween dance routine. Students and their families had the opportunity to attend the annual college fair hosted by the Academy of Our Lady Guidance Office on Wednesday, October 9. With more than 30 university representatives in attendance, students had numerous options to explore and research as they begin to determine where they will attend college in the future. The National English Honor Society is hosting their annual Book Drive October 13 - October 17. All students are encouraged to bring in used books to be donated to Friends of the Jefferson Parish Library. NEHS has a goal of collecting 521 books. For more information click on the title of this post.

Open to middle school girls who are interested in living a day in the life of a penguin! Penguin Preview is the perfect opportunity for prospective students to experience Academy of Our Lady. Held during the school day, students will have the opportunity to attend classes with an Academy student, meet members of the student body and faculty, as well as take a tour of the Academy of Our Lady campus! The Academy of Our Lady Cheerleaders rallied the school together for the annual Pink Volleyball Game on October 3. The volleyball team defeated De La Salle. Before the game students tailgated in the student courtyard participating in different games and activities, sponsored by the National Art Honor Society, Photography Club and Key Club. In addition to overseeing Pink Game events, the cheerleaders also hosted a bake sale. Homerooms decorated the gym wall mats as part of a competition for the best pink decorations. Academy of Our Lady offered a preview of the Fall Fest Pumpkin Patch to local grammar schools as a field trip opportunity. One hundred students from St. Rosalie and Our Lady of Perpetual Help along with their parents visited the patch for pumpkins, games, face paint and more. Thank you so much for joining us this morning. We hope our guests had as much fun as we did. The Pumpkin Patch will open at 6 pm to kick off our annual Fall Fest. It is today only. The annual Fall Pep Rally was held September 27. Athletic teams including swim, volleyball and cross country were honored during the rally. Students and teachers took part in class games to earn spirit points. The seniors were awarded the megaphone for earning the most spirit points. For pictures click on the title of this post.
The Film Studies class was recently treated to a presentation by alumna Melissa Carpenter ’10. Carpenter currently works in the film industry as a freelance prop person.
